What is the iUpgrader 1TB to 4TB iPod Classic 7th Gen in Space Grey?

It is an original Apple iPod Classic 7th generation, rebuilt by iRefresher with 1 TB to 4 TB of solid-state storage, a new high-capacity battery, a new click wheel and new front and back covers, in a space grey finish. It syncs with iTunes and Apple Music exactly as a standard iPod Classic does, plays video, and is the only configuration in our range offered with Bluetooth built inside the device. Can you add Bluetooth to an iPod Classic?

Yes, and this is the one model in our range where we fit it inside the device. The internal Bluetooth option puts the transmitter within the iPod itself, paired with the 3000 mAh battery, so there is no dongle hanging off the headphone jack and nothing extra to charge or lose. It pairs with AirPods, wireless headphones and Bluetooth speakers the way any modern device would.

Space grey is also the finish that suits the internal build best. The thick back cover the 3000 mAh battery requires is less conspicuous in the darker anodising than it is in silver, so the device still reads as a stock iPod at a glance. If you want a wireless iPod that looks untouched, this is the configuration to order.

If you would rather not have the device opened for it, the external Kokkia i10s transmitter plugs into the headphone jack and works with any iPod.

How many songs fit on a 1TB iPod Classic?

A 1 TB iUpgrader gives roughly 900 GB of usable space, which holds about 30,000 tracks in Apple Lossless or FLAC at CD quality, or about 2,500 albums. A standard 160 GB iPod Classic holds roughly 5,000 lossless tracks, so a 1 TB build stores around six times more and a 4 TB build around twenty-four times more. The table assumes an average track length of about four and a half minutes.

A note on the last row: the iPod Classic hardware predates hi-res audio, and its output is not the point of buying one. Files at 24-bit will play, but you are storing them rather than getting hi-res playback out of the device. If bit-perfect hi-res is your priority, a modern player is the right purchase.

Does the iPod Classic 50,000 song limit apply?

Yes, and it is worth understanding before you choose a capacity. Apple’s firmware loads the entire song database into the iPod’s 64 MB of RAM, which caps it at roughly 50,000 tracks no matter how much storage is fitted. That ceiling is about track count, not gigabytes, so it behaves very differently depending on your library:

• A lossless library never hits it at 1 TB. 30,000 ALAC or FLAC tracks sits comfortably under the ceiling, which is exactly why high capacity and lossless go together.
• A compressed library hits it early. At 320 kbps MP3 you reach 50,000 tracks at around 550 GB, before a 1 TB drive is full.
• Rockbox removes the ceiling. Rockbox is free open-source firmware for the iPod Classic that reads tracks from storage instead of holding the database in memory, so the track limit disappears. It also adds FLAC and Ogg playback. It installs alongside Apple’s firmware, and you choose which to boot. Ask us if you would like it set up before your unit ships.

In short: if you have a very large compressed library, ask about Rockbox. If you listen in lossless, Apple’s firmware is fine at any capacity we sell.

Does a modded iPod Classic still work with iTunes and Apple Music in 2026?

Yes. The upgrade replaces the hard drive and the battery and does not alter Apple’s firmware, so the iPod syncs exactly as an unmodified one does. What has changed is where the sync happens, and this trips up most people:

• On Windows, iTunes still handles iPod syncing the way it always has.
• On macOS, iTunes no longer exists. iPod syncing moved to Finder, not the Music app, which is the single most common point of confusion. Connect the iPod, open a Finder window, and it appears in the sidebar under Locations. If you do not see a sidebar, press Command + Option + S.
• If you would rather not use Apple’s software at all, Rockbox lets you drag and drop files onto the iPod like a USB drive, on any operating system.

Why buy a modded iPod Classic instead of using a phone?

Because a phone cannot hold the library and will not leave you alone. A 4 TB iUpgrader stores an entire lossless collection on the device itself. Most modern players ship with 32 GB to 64 GB of internal storage and rely on a microSD card for the rest, though flagship models from Astell&Kern carry 256 GB or more. What makes this different from a modded iPod on eBay?

Three things, and they are the three that go wrong on cheap builds.

• Genuine Tarkan iFlash boards. The iFlash is the storage adapter the iPod community standardised on. Generic clone adapters are the most common cause of a modded iPod that freezes, drops tracks, or refuses to restore in iTunes. We do not use them.
